OCR: ROBOTS IN FILM THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS INTERPLANETARY SPACECRAFT The Forward Antimatter Engine (cont.) However, there is one stumbling-block: manufacturing antimatter in sufficient quantities. Today, only research centers equipped with particle accelerators, such as the Fermilab in Illinois and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), can produce antimatter, and only in tiny amounts. A FAE for an interplanetary vessel would require several kilos of antimatter! Given current technology, it will take years of costly research before particle accelerators would be able to produce enough antimatter to fuel the FAE. Not to mention the unsolved problems and risks: cooling, ventilation, radiation, etc. All these various studies show that improving propulsion systems will inevitably be a very long and costly process. But, for a number of years, some researchers have been exploring yet another solution, one that is not only "elegant" but poetic-solar sails ... MARS BETAT
